I'd think the closest competitors are the 370z, turbo 4 and 6 cylinder camaro and mustang, and that's it? It's a pretty niche vehicle. The 370z is really the closest competitor.

Honestly, I’ve said it before but why would I spend $50K on a car when I can have 2 cars for $25K that both do vastly different things (Jeep and Fiesta ST for example).

I feel if you spend your money intelligently, you can still have new cars but have more fun.

I dont see how you would go with the 4cyl over an M240i. Hell my Gencoupe is a better option than this. 255 hp out of a 4cyl turbo is a very bad decision.

This is a BMW engine, that  255 hp is rated on a 100 degree day at the top of the very tallest Bavarian Mountain, trust me, it would walk your genesis coupe. But the turbo 6 is definitely the better option

Even though the 3.0 Supra is priced decently, somehow  this is extremely CP along with the 4-cyl Z4, any TT or SLK, and even the 6-cyl Z4. For some reason there is this massive gap there for sporty cars. I think it’s because you not only have to jump to a bigger longitudinal platform but also bump the engine up?

Even if you produce as much power if not more than your competitors, why would you advertise that the car “has less power” as alternative options? Potential buyers will be cross shopping the supra with mustangs, camaros, even luxury sportier oriented cars , like the m240i. Hell, even the Kia Stinger GT is priced below the 2.0. So if someone looks at the stats and sees 255, as opposed to some thing closer to 300, it’s gonna raise a flag.

Of course hardcore guys will know about all the ins and outs of a car like this, but for the moderate and not as interested, it can come across as a value proposition that isn’t as favorable as other options.

If Toyota wasn’t interested in appealing to those people, they would have stuck with only offering the 3.0.

Talking strictly about coupes..

I would cross shop the 230i. Possibly the ATS 2.0T. But the A5 2.0T isn’t really as sporty as the other two. O f the 2+2's, the 230i and M240i are the way to go for the E urosnob. Otherwise, various Mustangs or Camaros fit the bill.

If you’re cross shopping sporty two seaters , the 370Z is crude junk. I would MUCH rather have even the 2 liter GR Supra. With the Miata’s recent power boost, and (finally) recently available telescoping wheel, I would consider a Miata RF. It’s got plenty of power to be fun, and I’m sure it would be a more engaging drive. And I’m a sucker for that RF top. Gorgeous.

Having said all that, as I said on the FP, it’s a two seater, so I inevitably would compare it to a low option or low mileage 2 liter 718 Cayman. That gets my vote every time.

Sooo, for me, my order of preference would probably be:

1. 718 Cayman

2. 2-series

3. (tie) GR Supra/Miata depending on budget.

4. Mustamaro

5. ATS 2.0T

6. A5 2.0T

7 . Taking an Uber

8 . 370Z

As far as other performance touring coupes (fuck it, Personal Luxury Cars), a base model 5.0 will run 35k, but beats this in every way. 2SS V8 Camaros start at 42.5k, but the same story there.

The only people buying these are people who are going to engine- swap them or turn them into race/drift cars. Even if this doesn’t have the brakes or diff of the six-cylinder model, those were probably going to get replaced if the car is getting a LS or a 2JZ or a K-swap.

I’ve seen a white one up close and a black one driving through town; the visuals were not improved with either color, to say the very least.

IMO, the sides/profile is just frumpy, the rear is akward, and the front end... Christ on a cracker, Stevie Wonder coulda designed a cleaner, more appealing fascia. Hell, he coulda designed a car with more coherent lines all the way around. The “nose” is WAY too high up in relation to the lower “wings”, which makes it look like a shoddy kit-car whose design couldn’t match the proportions of the car/chassis it’s built on.

I mean, to me, there’s “ugly”, and then there’s this thing which is more head-scratchingly “...What in the actual f*ck were they thinking ?” It’s in a league of i t s own.
